Alternative Education
Charlottesville City Schools offer a number of programs to support students who are not — for many reasons — successful in a traditional classroom setting.
The Henry Avenue Learning Center
The Henry Avenue Learning Center serves students in grades 6 -12 who need intensive behavioral and academic interventions. A school psychologist is available and students participate in community service, online learning, CATEC classes, or other initiatives such as the Philosophers‘ Group with the Women's Center at UVA and Youth Challenged Advised and Positively Promoted (YCAPP). WALK (Work Achieves Lasting Knowledge)
The WALK Program began in 2008 to provide ongoing assistance for students who are failing classes, missing credits for graduation, in danger of dropping out, or who may benefit from a more personalized learning environment. Many students who may not succeed in a traditional classroom are transformed in this alternative setting. WALK offers an online, self-paced learning program combined with one-on-one support and flexible scheduling. This adaptive, effective approach makes it possible for students to WALK across the stage at graduation. Read more »
