Program Publications
We have several kinds of publications available here. For both teachers and students we have the Multi-Cultural Brief, Health Journals, and Local Health Resources. For teachers' use we have two curricula: the Health Curriculum and the Communication in the Workplace Curriculum. Read on for descriptions and links.
Multi-Cultural Brief
The Multi-Cultural Brief is an ESL newsletter created by students who want to improve their English. It is produced as part of a newspaper class. The purpose of the Multi-Cultural Brief is to provide students with an opportunity to:
- Share their experiences of being from another country
- Offer multi-cultural perspectives on life in Charlottesville
- Help inform people who are new to Charlottesville of issues and opportunities around town
- Build a bridge of communication between
the ESL population and Americans living in the Charlottesville community
While some of the articles are specific to the Charlottesville local area, many of them are relevant regardless of where one is living in the United States. For the current issue and searchable back issues please visit our adultslearn.org site..
Health Journals
The Health Journals have been developed as part of a health curriculum used in our program each fall session. These are also similar to the Multi-Cultural Brief in that they are student newsletters, but they focus specifically on health issues.
- Health Journal 2002 (pdf, 296KB)
- Health Journal 2003 (pdf, 448KB)
Local Health Resources
This is a list of health resources in the Charlottesville area.
Health Curriculum
The Health Curriculum is an eight-unit multi-level curriculum that focuses broadly on developing civic awareness and participation with regard to health, illness, and health care. This curriculum is for teachers to use in their classrooms.
Communication in the Workplace Curriculum
The Communication in the Workplace Curriculum is designed as a 12-week course for limited English speakers in a workplace class. It is student-generated, open-ended, and project-based. It is for teachers to use in class.
