Adult Learning Center

GED & ESL Class Information

The Adult Learning Center offers both day and evening classes in Skills Development, GED preparation, and English as a Second Language.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes range from low beginning to advanced levels. In addition to classes with specific start and end dates we also offer open and free opportunities for students to practice English. Students with limited English skills may also register for GED (high school diploma equivalency) and Skills Development classes as appropriate.

We recommend the appropriate class for each student after the student takes an assessment test as part of registration. For a complete class schedule, click here.

In addition to our public classes, GED and ESL classes are also available to employees of the following organizations. If you work at one of these places, talk to your supervisor about taking classes at work:

  • City of Charlottesville
  • Courtyard by Marriott on Main Street
  • Hampton Inn & Suites on Main Street
  • UVA Dining Services
  • UVA Facilities Management
  • UVA Housing Division

Registration and Fees

Classes run during three sessions: fall, winter, and spring. Pre-registration is required for all classes. To find out how to register for classes, click here.

Most classes cost $125. City residents receive a $25 discount, so they pay $100. Fees are indicated on the class schedule. Scholarships are available based on need. For information or to request a scholarship, contact Susan Erno, Program Director, at 245-2825 or at Susan.Erno@ccs.k12.va.us.

Speak Up, Charlottesville! Speaker Series

We are now offering a free speaker series, free and open to the public, addressing important issues and services in our community. Topics include How Your Child Can Be Successful in School, Keeping Yourself and Your Family Healthy, and more. For more information, contact Cherry Stewart at 245-2815.

Festival of Cultures

In addition to our regular classes, the Charlottesville ESL Program also organizes the Charlottesville Festival of Cultures. The Festival of Cultures is always held on the second Saturday in May. If you would like to help plan this event, contact Debbie at 245-2819 or Debra.Tuler@ccs.k12.va.us.
