GED Test: Frequently Asked Questions

Who can take the GED Exam?
Any adult age 18 or over who is no longer enrolled in school. Some students under 18 can take it in special circumstances with permission from the school system.

How much does it cost?
For first time test-takers there is a one-time only administration fee of $10.00 plus $7.00 per test or just $45 for the entire exam. After that, it costs $7.00 per test. If you pass the Official Practice Test, you may be issued a voucher for a free test.

How often can I take the test if I don't pass the first time ?
You may take each subject test up to 3 times per year. There is no minimum waiting period between tests.

What kind of scores do I need to earn a GED?
In Virginia, a total score of 2250 is needed to pass the GED, with a minimum score of 410 on each test. You must get an average of 450 on the tests in order to reach the 2250 total.

How will I know my scores?
You will be able to find them online or by contacing Carol Coffey at 245-2823.

How do I know if I'm ready to take a test?
If you have scored 2500 or above on an Official Practice Test. It is a good idea to score a bit higher than you need on a practice test before you take the official GED test. If you are not sure if you are ready, ask your teacher and she will help you decide.

How should I prepare for the GED test?

  • Take the Official Practice Test.
  • Study regularly. If you don't have a place at home, go to a library.
  • Organize your study materials. Create a folder or notebook for each subject.
  • Read regularly. Read newspapers, magazines, books, etc. Get a library card and find topics that interest you.
  • Take notes. Restate important information in your own words. Summarize the main idea of the reading.
