GED Program Information

Services

Charlottesville City Schools Adult Education offers the following GED-related services:

  • Pre-GED, GED Preparation, and GED Fast Track classes. Go to 935-A Second St. SE or call 245-2817 for a catalog, with class listings and prices. Or click on Class Information.
  • E-Learn VA classes, working on computer with a teacher's assistance, and at home or elsewhere online. Classes Friday, 10am to 12 noon at Friendship Court and Wednesdays 11am to 2pm at Computers for Kids. Call 245-2817 for more information and to register.
  • Workplace GED classes. Currently classes are available to employees at City of Charlottesville, UVA, and VDOT.
  • Assessments for class placement at the beginning of the fall session and every Wednesday at 10am at the Virginia Workforce Center (VWC) at 2211 Hydraulic Road (one block west of the Hydraulic and 29 intersection).  Enter the building through the door on Hydraulic and ask for Jim Gordon.
  • Books and calculators matching the ones used on the GED test, for purchase.
  • GED Practice Tests to be taken at home and returned to the Adult Learning Center. $10 deposit, which is refunded when the test is returned. Pick up a packet at the Adult Learning Center, 925-A Second St. SE.
  • Free GED Practice Tests administered on Saturdays (once a month) at the Adult Learning Center. Upcoming dates are:

To register for the test at the Adult Learning Center, you must:

  1. Register in person at least 7 days before the test, by appointment with Carol Coffey or Donald Jones, bringing a completed registration packet. The packet may be obtained from the Adult Learning Center, 245-2817 or 245-2823, or by going online at GED123.org, completing it and printing it off to bring with you to your appointment at ALC.
  2. Show current Goverment issued photo ID (drivers license, passport, VA ID, etc.), with name, signature, current Virginia address and date of birth.
  3. Bring payment in the form of a money order made out to Charlottesville City Schools, exact amount in cash, or a completed voucher for the Official Practice Test if you have taken it and your scores are high enough to qualify for free testing (first time testers still need to pay the $8.50 administrative fee).

  • VA GED Hotline:
    Call 1 877-37-MY-GED or check their website at www.vaged.vcu.edu. Any individual can call and request a GED Practice Test. The caller will be asked if a referral can be made to the local adult education program. These referrals will be forwarded to appropriate programs. The test, along with an answer key, will be mailed to the caller.
