Charlottesville among VSBA Green Schools Challenge Winners for 2009

Two recognitions given for environmental efforts

Nine school divisions received top awards in the 2009 Virginia School Boards Association Green Schools Challenge, including a second place award for Charlottesville City Schools. Winners were announced at the VSBA Annual Convention on November 18 in Williamsburg. The competition was sponsored by Moseley Architects and TRANE. Winning school divisions were selected from over 51 entries, and 30 school divisions—including Charlottesville City Schools—were recognized as certified green school divisions.

The VSBA Green Schools Challenge is designed to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by both the local school division and the broader community. This is the first year that VSBA has presented the awards. Winning school divisions were:

Student Population under 5,000

First Place:              Nottoway County Public Schools

Second Place:         Charlottesville City Public Schools

Third Place:             Patrick County Public Schools

Greenbrier courtyard with rain barrels The courtyard at Greenbrier Elementary School has rain barrels, a weathervane, and a garden that allows for lessons about plants and environmental systems.
