Parents Invited to Attend Parent University
March 13 at Walker Upper Elementary School
For the second year, Charlottesville City School Division is offering a Parent University for City families with students in grades pre-K through 6. The event, “Building Bridges for Success,” will take place on Saturday, March 13 at Walker Upper Elementary from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Each participant may select two sessions from 18 workshops. Teachers, administrators, and representatives from neighborhood organizations will share successful strategies and resources for bridging student learning, families, schools, and communities.
Speakers
Keynote speaker, Chris O'Neal will discuss the challenges of raising kids in a digital world. He is a former K-8 teacher who has served as State Director of Technology and currently works at both UVA and the Virginia Department of Education as a technology consultant.
At lunch, Dr. Ray Ford will address the need for raising healthy kids and making healthy lifestyle choices for families. He was a practicing pediatrician in Charlottesville, Virginia for decades until his retirement in 2004. He is now Medical Director for the Haiti Mission and co-founded an orphanage in Haiti with his family.
In the workshops, parents will have the opportunity to hear speakers talk about math, reading, school transitions, healthy living, English as a second language, and 21st century skills. Workshop titles include; Building Number Sense at Home (Pre-K–6th grade), Books to Hook Boys (4th–6th grade), Movin’ On Up to Buford (6th grade), Growing Up Healthy…A Fun & Positive Approach to Healthy Family Living (Pre-K–6th grade), and Critical Thinking Every Day (Pre-K–1st grade).
