CHS Students Improve Graduation Rates for Most Subgroups

The Virginia Department of Education recently released 2009 Four-Year On-Time Graduation Rates for all Virginia school divisions. The current formula—which was introduced last year—tracks the cohort of students who enter the ninth grade for the first time four years prior to reporting. The Virginia On-Time Graduation Rate is a graduation rate based on individual student-level data tracked over time that fully accounts for student mobility and retention patterns.

The 2009 four-year on-time graduation rate for all Charlottesville High School students is 76.5%; the rate for 2008 for all students was 74.6%. A table of figures follows.

Charlottesville City Schools has intervention and remediation programs in place at all grade levels to support achievement and graduation. Last year, 43 CHS seniors graduated, due to their participation in the WALK program (Work Achieves Lasting Knowledge). WALK offers instructional alternatives to the traditional classroom, such as online learning or night schedules, so that students complete high school.

Additionally, individual “success conferences” have been held for the past three years with Buford or CHS students and their parents to confirm that each student is positioned to graduate. The student’s complete school record is reviewed and discussed so that all means of instructional support are offered and students make a focused effort to graduate on time.
