Tinsley Donation Supports City Schools in Music, Tennis and Academics

The Boyd C. Tinsley Fund at the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation has awarded a grant amounting to $75,000 to the Charlottesville City Schools to support music, tennis and academic tutoring. It is the seventh year that Mr. Tinsley has generously provided these funds to the City schools.

The grant funds private music lessons for Walker, Buford and Charlottesville High School Orchestra students who would otherwise be unable to afford them.  In addition to providing lessons, the grant covers musical supplies, camp tuition and instruments for graduating seniors at CHS who are entering a music program at the university level. Dave Matthews Band member Boyd Tinsley is a 1982 graduate of the CHS Orchestra Program.

CHS Orchestra Director Laura Thomas says, “Boyd's gift to the CHSO has enabled every interested student to take private lessons, regardless of economic status.  We are able to provide tuition for workshops, extra music, and quality accessories for orchestra members. We are deeply grateful to our most famous alumnus for his generous gift!”

The grant also pays salaries for tennis instructors, tennis camps, and racquets for students who complete the program.  The academic portion of the grant pays for one-on-one tutoring for students in need of tutoring services.

“Mr. Tinsley’s continued support for these programs gives many students an opportunity to excel in areas that may not have been otherwise available,” says Superintendent Dr. Rosa S. Atkins.
