Charlottesville High School is back on top in Group AA, while Group A and AAA crowned traditional powerhouses in the 2005-06 Wachovia Cup race for year-long success.

This will be Charlottesville's second Wachovia Cup; its first was won in 2003. Madison County has won for the 12th time in 13 years; Chantilly now has eight cups earned over a 12 year period.

Virginia High School League

First awarded in 1990, the Wachovia Cup represents 17 years of excellence. Six cups are presented, one for academic activities and one for athletics in each of VHSL's three enrollment classifications. The winners for athletics will be announced in June, following the completion of spring championships.

Winners of the Wachovia Cup are determined by a point system based on performance in VHSL state competitions. Schools can earn academic activity points for outstanding participation in scholastic bowl, creative writing, theatre, forensics, debate, newspaper, yearbook and magazine. Complete standings are enclosed.

For the five activities involving team champions — scholastic bowl, creative writing, debate, theatre and forensics — points are awarded on the following basis: first place, 50; second place, 45; third place, 40; fourth place, 35; fifth place, 30; sixth place, 25; seventh place, 20; and eighth place, 15.

Scoring for publications is based on the ranking earned in the League's evaluation service: Trophy Class, 35; First Place, 20; Second Place, 5.

In Group AA, top-ranked Charlottesville (220) finished 67.5 points ahead of its closest competition, Abingdon (152.5). Charlottesville won the Scholastic Bowl and Creative Writing championships and also finished second in forensics, fourth in debate and theatre, and earned a second place rating for its literary magazine. Abingdon earned points for a third place finish in Creative Writing, a fifth place finish in theatre, a sixth place finish in forensics, a seventh place tie in Scholastic Bowl, a Trophy Class newspaper, and a second place yearbook. Harrisonburg ranks third in the Wachovia Cup standings with 145 points, and Blacksburg ties with Salem with 140 points.
