Walker G.I.F.T. Club Sponsors Book Drive

The members of G.I.F.T. believe that “Reading Opens Doors,” therefore the Generation Investing in the Future Today (G.I. F. T.) Club of Walker Upper Elementary School is sponsoring a book drive to provide books to kindergarten and first grade students in the Johnson Elementary School community. Our goal is to increase early literacy and help these students become excellent readers by building home libraries.

G.I.F.T. members have visited several elementary classrooms this year and read with the students. Although this has been a rewarding service learning experience, G.I.F.T. desires to help even more by giving these students a book. In order to give each kindergarten and 1st grader at Johnson Elementary School a book, we are asking for your help. Currently, Walker students are working together in their triads to gather books and donations as well.

G.I.F.T. is collecting new or gently used picture books, and beginner readers written on a first grade and kindergarten reading level. You may also send monetary donations and books will be purchased for distribution. If you would like to help with the book drive, please drop off books and donations in the guidance office at Walker School or send books by a Walker student. All items sent in should be forwarded to the attention of Atalaya Sergi by May 26, 2006.

This project is sponsored in part by The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation-Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band.
