Walker Upper Elementary School Teacher Dorothy Ely Receives Phi Delta Kappa’s Middle School Teacher of the Year Award

Dorothy Ely, Gifted Education Specialist at Walker Upper Elementary School has received Phi Delta Kappa’s Middle School teacher of the Year award. Ms. Ely received a plaque and was honored at PDK’s annual dinner meeting on March 17, 2006. She was nominated by her colleague, Julia Lacy who states, “Mrs. Ely’s outstanding instructional style, peer collaboration, and soft-spoken, caring approach to teaching exemplify the qualities to which we educators strive.”

James Henderson, Principal at Walker Upper Elementary School, says: “Bonny Ely seeks to make every student, every staff member, and every parent feel they are part of the school community. Her valuable insights, special expertise, and a real sense of professionalism and dedication make her an invaluable member of our staff.’

Ms. Ely has been teaching in Charlottesville City Schools since 1988. She is the mother of four children all of whom attended Charlottesville City Schools. She says “I’m proud of the fact that our children had the opportunity to be part of our school system. They received excellent educations here. I believe in this system!”
