Charlottesville High School Speech and Debate Teams Capture State Catholic Forensics League Title

Both the CHS speech and debate teams won their respective tournaments at the Catholic Forensics League State Tournament. The tournament was held at Clover Hill HS near Richmond. This is the first ever CFL state title for the debate team and 2nd for the speech team. In addition, CHS won the year round State Sweepstakes trophy awarded to the school that has accumulated the most sweepstakes points throughout the year. This is the first time CHS has ever won this award.

In winning both titles, CHS qualified 16 entries for the National Catholic Forensics League Grand National Tournament to be held in Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend. The students and the places they won in their respective categories are as follows:

Speech

  • Annette Griffin — 1st in Oral Interpretation
  • Helen Alston — 4th in Oral Interpretation
  • Samantha Chapman — 6th in Oral Interpretation (1st alternate for nationals)
  • Najat Nelson—Amaker — 1st in Original Oratory
  • Amelia Thomson-Deveaux — 5th in Original Oratory
  • Addie Alexander — 6th in Original Oratory (1st alternate for nationals)
  • Nic McCarthy — 1st in Dramatic Performance
  • Jordan McRae — 2nd in Dramatic Performance
  • Jamie Kennedy — 3rd in Dramatic Performance
  • Mark Washington — 5th in Dramatic Performance
  • Laurie Murphy and Casey Wagner — 2nd in Duo Interpretation
  • Charlotte Hornsby and Robert Merkel — 5th in Duo Interpretation
  • David Whiteside — 4th in Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Brian Bills — 6th in Extemporaneous Speaking (1st alternate for nationals)

Speech

  • Hal Smith — 1st in Student Congress
  • Simon Weiner — 3rd in Student Congress
  • Paul Wiley — 5th in Student Congress
  • Brendan Ford — 6th in Student Congress
  • Alex Tucker — 2nd in Lincoln-Douglass debate
