Charlottesville City Schools Bands Earn Superior Ratings at District Band Festival
Kudos to the Charlottesville High School Bands for completing the requirements to be recognized as a Virginia Honor Band Program for the 24th year. The CHS Band is one of only two band programs in the commonwealth to have achieved this honor for 24 years.
At the District Band Festival, Friday and Saturday, March 10 & 11, 2006, the CHS Symphonic Band received straight superior ratings in the Grade 4 music classification (medium difficult) and the Wind Ensemble received straight superior ratings in the Grade 6 music classification (most difficult). Vincent Tornello directs both of the bands.
At the same festival, all the bands from the Charlottesville City Schools received straight superior ratings. Those bands are:
- Buford Middle School Concert Band, grade 3 music and the Buford Symphonic Band, grade 4 music, directed by Joseph Tornello.
- Walker Upper Elementary 6th Grade Band, grade 3 music, directed by Robert Dunnenberger.
- Walker Upper Elementary 5th Grade Band, grade 2 music, directed by Christine Willard.
The Buford Middle School Band Program reached another milestone at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors' Association Concert Festival. Buford Symphonic Band and Buford Concert Band received straight Superior Ratings from the panel of 4 judges.
This marks 23 consecutive years that the Buford Band program has achieved a Superior rating at the District Level. Within the Band's 23 consecutive years of Superior Ratings, the program has now achieved a total of 36 consecutive Superior Ratings at this Festival. All 36 Bands who have performed at the District level the past 23 years have received the highest rating of superior. Congratulations to the 100 members of the Symphonic Band and Concert Band.
The District Band Festival is a state level assessment for the bands. In order to achieve a superior rating, bands must score the equivalent to, or above, the 85th percentile.
