Walker Upper Elementary School Launches 2nd Semester EDGE Program

Walker Upper Elementary School is now registering students for the 2nd Semester of their Extended Day Generates Excellence (EDGE) Program. The school offers over 50 sessions of choice, 12 sessions of required attendance, and 30 learning labs (after school study sessions). Sessions are held from 2:35 until 4:25 p.m. Monday through Thursday each week. All Walker students received a registration form and are eligible to participate in the program.

At the end of the first semester, approximately 80% of the students enrolled at Walker attended one or more sessions a week.

Highlights of the EDGE Program include:

  • Band, vocal music, and orchestra students performed in winter programs.
  • 7 sixth grade band students will represent Walker in the District 13 Honors Band (an amazing accomplishment for students at this grade level).
  • Art Quest 5th and 6th grade students held open houses to showcase their art portfolios.
  • 8 fifth grade students are preparing for competition in the Destination and Imagination contest.
  • The Volleyball girl’s team is preparing for competition in the Albemarle County Middle School League, the youngest team in the league competing with middle school students.
  • Over 30 students visited new building construction in Charlottesville and got a birds-eye-view of building construction as a career.
  • Over 100 students participated in foreign language.
  • 45 students enrolled in the drama program and 35 participated in the performance of Alice in Wonderland for the public.  They will perform again for Walker Students on January 23, 2006, and plan future performances  in the spring.
  • Students published the Walker Way, a student newspaper.

James Henderson, Principal at Walker Upper Elementary School commented; “These are just a few of the many activities that hopefully enrich the lives of our students and instill a sense of understanding that learning doesn’t end at the dismissal bell.”
