Charlottesville High School Students Experience Success in Harvard Debates

The Lincoln-Douglas debaters Alex Tucker, Ruffin Evans, Tyler Teisberg and James Wellbeloved-Stone, Bergen Nelson, and Luke Allen won a combined 15 rounds of debate. Bergen Nelson and Tyler Teisberg, with 4-2 records, were within 3 speaker points of the elimination rounds.

According to Debate Coach Ian Marcus-Amelkin, “the Student Congress was a real success story.” Paul Wiley, Hal Smith, Simon Wiener and Brenden Ford represented Charlottesville High School. Paul Wiley and Hal Smith broke into the semi-final round, ranking them among the top 100 debaters in the country. Charlottesville High School won the Annual "Best New School Award" at the award's ceremony; this award is given out each year to the top school competing at Harvard for the first time.

Well over 100 schools from a23 states were represented. 350 students participated in the Lincoln Douglas Debates and 417 in the Student Congress.

Congratulations to these young men and women for representing Charlottesville High School and our community so well.
