Professional Development

Professional development at CCS is designed with staff input to model our philosophy of differentiated instruction. PD opportunities foster continuous improvement through synchronous and asynchronous courses that accommodate multiple learning styles, preferences, and needs, including conference-style workshops; small group and individualized coaching; professional learning communities; graduate level courses in partnership with UVA; national conferences; virtual classes and webinars.

A few recent highlights of PD activities:

More than 500 educators from Central VA attended the 2nd Annual Shenandoah Valley Technology Consortium SMART Teaching Conference, hosted at CHS

Number and Number Sense Training will be offered to K-8 teachers

Administrators' Academy builds leadership capacity

Charlottesville City Schools received two Virginia Department of Education grants to increase content knowledge and sharpen classroom skills of teachers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics:

  • Teaching Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science for Grades K-5 — University of Virginia and CCS; $274,677 to serve 120 teachers.
  • 21st-Century Teaching Leads to 21st-Century Learning: Functions Algebra Project — UVA and 16 school divisions, including Albemarle County and CCS. $200,000 will serve 55 teachers in participating divisions in its 2nd year.

All secondary teachers will receive iPads to expand their selection of interactive web-based tools to promote engaging activities in support of teaching and learning.
