The Nutrition Services Department strives to serve balanced and healthy meals to students while maintaining a fiscally responsible program. We support educators so that children get the nourishment they need in order to learn. Our breakfast and lunch programs provide 2/3 of a student’s recommended dietary allowance. Free and reduced price meals ensure that all students have access to fresh, healthy food.
Nutrition Services follows USDA regulations and bases its standards for sugar, salt, and fats on Institute of Medicine standards for school meals. As a self-supporting public school program, we work extremely hard to balance regulations, nutritional values, fiscal realities, and student preferences.
We work with the School Health Advisory Board (SHAB) to enact policies and programs that support the health and well-being of students, families, and staff. Wellness Policy JHCF recognizes the importance of a coordinated school health program in supporting healthy choices for a lifetime.
My School Bucks
CCS has partnered with My School Bucks so families can check the balances for their students’ meal accounts and make online payments. All services are optional. Accounts are free, but beginning in August 2015, families who choose to make online payments will pay a small service fee.
New Meal Prices 2014-15
To comply with USDA regulations, on May 1, 2014, the CCS School Board voted to raise the price of all school meals by 25 cents. Effective August 2014, the new prices will be: Breakfast K-12: $1.50, Lunch K-8: $2.25, Lunch 9-12: $2.50, Adult Lunch: $3.25.
Nutrition Services offers a vegan and vegetarian lunch option at all schools. “Salad Sensations” offers made-to-order veggie trays or salad plates. Fill out a "Salad Sensations" order form and take it to school.
The Charlottesville Local Food Hub and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services presented Nutrition Services staff members with the 2011 Trailblazer Award. The award honors individuals and/or institutions who are making progress towards developing creative solutions to incorporate fresh, healthy local food into their procurement policies. This is just one among many innovative local practices.
