Nutrition Services
The Nutrition Services Department of the Charlottesville City Schools strives to serve balanced and healthy meals to students while maintaining a fiscally responsible program. We support educators so that children who are at risk financially can get the nourishment they need in order to learn. Our breakfast and lunch programs provide 2/3 of a student’s recommended dietary allowance.
The Charlottesville City Schools Nutrition Services Department follows USDA regulations and bases its standards for sugar, salt, and fats on Institute of Medicine standards for school meals. As a self-supporting public school program, we work extremely hard to balance regulations, nutritional values, fiscal realities, and student preferences.
Charlottesville is fortunate to have a great deal of community support in providing fresh, healthy food to students. We have adopted a number of innovative local practices in order to offer healthier and more varied options for students.
We work with the School Health Advisory Board (SHAB) in the development and evaluation of policies and programs that support the health and wellbeing of students, families, and school staff. The division Wellness Policy JHCF recognizes the importance of a coordinated school health program for all students and staff and provides for programs that support healthy choices for a lifetime.
