World Languages Program

CCS offers courses in five world languages.

At Buford Middle School, students may study French I-Honors or Spanish I-Honors. These two languages are studied over a course of one and a half years with the students earning one high school credit.

Charlottesville High School offers:

  • French I-Honors through AP French Language
  • German I-Honors through AP German Language
  • Latin I-Honors through AP Virgil
  • Spanish I-Honors through AP Spanish Literature

In addition, academic levels I-III are offered in these four languages. A fifth language, Mandarin Chinese, has been introduced in 2010.

The World Language curricula for grades 9-12 are based on the Virginia Standards of Learning and the National Standards of Learning. As part of the Advanced Studies Diploma, students may elect to pursue the study of two years of two languages or three years of one language. At Charlottesville High School, there are language clubs as well as National Foreign Language Honor Societies to help students deepen their knowledge and practice conversational skills.
