School Efficiency Review & Process

Background

In the fall 2008, the Charlottesville City School division contracted with the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget to have an efficiency review conducted by MGT of America, Inc. This process was undertaken to identify best practices in our school division as well as opportunities for increased efficiency. As stewards of public funds, it is important to use our available resources effectively and to ensure as much funding as possible goes to our core mission of instruction. The Efficiency Review Report was presented at the January 8, 2009 Board Meeting, and is now available for download. The final report is 331 pages long. There is also a shorter summary version.

Community Engagement Workshops

Throughout 2009, Community Engagement Workshops offered an opportunity to discuss options regarding school facilities and grade configurations, particularly five options:

Option 1: Leave City school division as is:  6 elementary schools (PK-4), 1 upper elementary (5-6), 1 middle school (7-8), 1 high school (9-12)
Option 2: Close 1 elementary school
Option 3: 6 elementary schools (PK-5), 2 middle schools (6-8), 1 high school (9-12)
Option 4: 6 elementary schools (PK-5), 1 middle school (6-8), 1 high school (9-12)
Option 5: Other reconfiguration possibilities?

Two Community Engagement Workshops with a panel discussion about pedagogy and learning environments were held to share research related to the topic. For information about the discussions and research, visit the Panel Discussion page.
